In ancient Mesopotamia, texts such as the Epic of Gilgamesh incorporated elements of divine intervention and spiritual quests, while ancient Greek mythology provided a rich tapestry of gods and demigods whose stories were deeply intertwined with the human experience.


In medieval literature, religious fantasy was often expressed through allegory and symbolic narratives. Works like Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy (1320) presented a detailed vision of the afterlife, combining Christian theology with imaginative descriptions of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. Similarly, John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress (1678) used a fantastical journey to explore Christian themes of salvation and moral struggle.

The 19th and early 20th centuries saw a shift as religious fantasy began to blend more explicitly with the burgeoning genre of modern fantasy. C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia (1950–1956) is a notable example, integrating Christian allegory with a richly imaginative world of magic and adventure. Lewis’s portrayal of Aslan as a Christ-like figure was pivotal in popularising religious themes within the fantasy genre.


J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings (1954) also reflects a deep engagement with Christian themes, though Tolkien himself resisted direct allegory, preferring to weave his own mythology into a story that explores the struggle between good and evil, the nature of power, and the importance of mercy and redemption.


The late 20th and early 21st centuries have seen a diversification of religious fantasy, with authors exploring a wide array of religious and spiritual traditions. Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy (1995–2000) challenged religious orthodoxy through its exploration of organized religion and the nature of divinity, while Neil Gaiman’s American Gods (2001) reimagines ancient deities in a contemporary American setting, addressing themes of belief and cultural change.
