Modern works, such as Seanan McGuire's Wayward Children series (2016-present), critically examine the implications of travelling between worlds, highlighting emotional trauma, belonging, and identity issues that resonate strongly with contemporary readers. Portal fantasy has also experienced a resurgence through digital media, video games, and graphic novels, maintaining relevance through interactive storytelling and innovative interpretations of classic tropes.
